Roots and Wings continues to develop the leaders of tomorrow by sending six children this year, ages 9-14, to participate in the annual Montessori Model United Nations, March 25-28, 2015 in New York City. The MMUN was developed for students to learn about the UN by actually participating in it. Students hone their knowledge of the countries they are to represent as ambassadors – Liberia and Ireland this year – and prepare speeches that they will present at the UN Assembly in front of students from around the world.
The children are passionate about changing the world for the better, and that is a driving force in their preparations! They will need to know everything about the countries they will represent – but it does not end there! They are also required to memorize the geographic locations of all 193 countries and to generally be ‘up’ on what is going on all around the world with respect to this year’s themes of: World Hunger and Poverty; and Deforestation.
2015 is the fourth year that Roots and Wings has participated in the MMUN and it will surely not be the last! Each year fundraising is a big challenge – students need to raise $10,000 to $20,000 to cover their travel and accommodation expenses.
