Summer Program July 2010

Construction/Building/Architecture

  • Week 1 July 5-9th: The History of Shelter

Come explore with us and get a hands on feel for construction and the different materials used. We will consider the Fundamental Needs of Man and the History of Shelters and shelter building. Should we build a castle in the classroom? And put up a tent in the school yard? Would you like to visit a Long House and the Museum of Anthropology?

  • Week 2 July 12-16th: Building and Engineering

Let’s build bridges, towers, arches, buildings, and coliseums! We will be using various building materials from Lego to balsa wood. We will discover what makes a sound building and the engineering involved to make a structure strong enough to hold various amounts of weight. This will be a scientific exploration week!

Field Trips: Lyn Canyon Suspension Bridge; Cleveland Dam

  • Week 3 July 19-23: Construct and Construction

Now we’re ready to build a house! We will create house drawing plans and use them to make model houses; we will explore with different materials and build different types of homes to test materials and soundness of structures (very small scale!) As a whole group we will build a shelter outside together. Fort Building is a very fun summer activity!

Field Trips: Construction site; Cement factory

  • Week 4 July26-30: Architecture Around the World

Discover the World through Architecture! From the Egyptian Pyramids to modern day buildings, the children will learn about the art of design and the beauty of its purpose.

Field trips: Downtown buildings (Art Gallery, Library, Big Towers etc.); Buddhist Temple
