In the 6 - 9-year olds class, the needs for stimulation of older students and an expanded base of learning are met. Beginning with the Time Line of Life, the Universe is opened to them and they gain confidence in recognizing their own place in relationship to the whole. The students experience "global education", learning the "Great Stories" of the universe, or the development of language or math, or stories of the history of their country or of man's inventions. Extensive memorization and mastery is not the aim, so much as what Montessori terms the "sowing of seeds" - stimulating interest in as many areas as possible, to prepare for later more detailed learning. Their learning extends more often beyond the classroom walls. And parents of these children know their obsession with moral issues, with fairness and justice that are the subject of frequent class discussions.
Ethics is an important part of our program, with daily discussions of social concerns, current events or needs of the group. A class executive is elected to conduct meetings according to Robert's Rules of Order, and children learn to value each individual's contribution. In September the students usually visit a wilderness camp, staying over one night. Benefits from this brief stay are tremendous, from helping establish class bonds that are a benefit throughout the year, to gaining in independence, to learning social and environmental skills. Although there are sometimes concerns by both parents and children before the trip, no one has ever been sorry they went! |





Although free to follow their own interests in many areas, the students are required to master basic concepts and to use their work time constructively. This is done through goal-setting, using individual progress charts. Good homework habits are begun early as students work on their choice of home study. Because they are usually already reading and writing and have a good understanding of mathematical relationships, they can progress rapidly at their own rate. They are encouraged to learn cooperatively, helping each other and rejoicing in the successes of their peers. Because each child works independently, there is no comparison, producing unhealthy feelings of superiority or inferiority, and no letter grading. There is a clear progression of activities in each subject area, and the students take pride in their progress, recognizing that individuals have different strengths and weaknesses, and so progress at different rates. The children keep their own records and can see at a glance if an area of learning needs attention.
These students also continue growing in music, with performances in voice or instruments. In French they are now able to perform simple skits and to begin writing what they have learned to say. Yoga is available for those who wish to participate, taught by a trained professional, Mornings usually begin with a group discussion and a minute of silence before the peace candle, thus providing a peaceful and unified atmosphere to begin each work session.
